The Duke of Cambridge has promised to modernise the monarchy when he becomes King. And at the unveiling of the National Windrush Monument at London's Waterloo station last week, we saw another example of how the 40-year-old plans to do things differently.
William, who was accompanied by his wife of 12 years, Kate, gave a heartfelt speech at the event. His words acknowledged the controversy surrounding the couple's tour of the Caribbean in March and the fact that the monarchy still has a lot to learn.
William said, "My family have been proud to celebrate [the Windrush generation's contribution to British culture] for decades whether that be through support from my father on Windrush Day, or more recently during my Grandmother's Platinum Jubilee, as people from all communities and backgrounds came together to acknowledge all that has changed over the past 70 years and look to the future." He added, "This is something that resonated with Catherine and me after our visit to the Caribbean earlier this year.
"Our trip was an opportunity to reflect, and we learnt so much. Not just about the different issues that matter most to the people of the region, but also how the past weighs heavily on the present. Sadly that is also the case for members of the Windrush Generation who were victims of racism when they arrived here. And discrimination remains an all too familiar experience for Black men and women in Britain in 2022." William also said, "Diversity is what makes us strong, and it is what reflects the modern, outward-looking values that are so important to our country." Royal expert Jennie Bond tells OK! that William's latest speech is the biggest insight yet as to what we can expect when he eventually becomes King.
