Just a year after getting her third Oscar nod for 1993’s Shadowlands, the 67-year-old said she “pushed the pause button” on her career. “The parts that were coming, I wasn’t interested in,” the An Officer and a Gentleman star later said.
So she left Hollywood for NYC, where she and husband Arliss Howard welcomed son Babe, now 25. (She also has a son, Noah, 36, with ex Timothy Hutton.)
Getting back in the biz with 2001’s Big Bad Love was difficult. “If you stop, it’s harder to get started again,” she reflected. “I still don’t think I made the wrong decision.”

The Catwoman star is back in the superhero universe, playing Janet Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but she’s known for taking years off between roles since 2000.
Now the 65-year-old, who adopted a baby girl, Claudia, in 1993 and moved out of L.A. with husband David Kelley (they also have son Henry, 28), says her rep as being “difficult” limited her options. “‘Where does it shoot? How long does it shoot?
Can I bring my kids? Is it during the school year?’” she’s said of her demands. “And then it was just too difficult to hire me, honestly. And I was OK with that.”
