So, we've all been there. It starts with three Oreos, moves to a bowl of custard and the next thing you know, you're elbow-deep in a party-sized packet of chips, and a 10-ton truck could not stop you. But my favourite junk food will make me feel better,' you think. The reality, though, is that it will only make you feel worse. When we're faced with stressful encounters and negative emotions, our brains crave something comforting... We think it's a Big Mac, but it's a lot more complicated than that.

THE FINAL CHOW DOWN

Emotional eating is a response to your mental state and an effort to suppress negative emotions. You're not hungry; you're stressed, sad, lonely, angry, bored, disappointed, going through a tough time, or worried about something. It's fine to have a few cookies after a long day, occasionally, but it can become problematic if this is your only way of dealing with emotions and the stresses of everyday life. Because after the cookies are finished, the feelings are still there, and you may be one step closer to forming an unhealthy cycle of binge eating.
