When it comes to the music industry, there’s constant talk about how the pop genre is entirely disposable. The case against pop music is that it is simply music for the masses — carefully crafted beats and clever production that add nothing to an oversaturated culture. But to dismiss a whole genre as such, without giving any consideration to the variety of artistes and their works, would be an unfair thing to do.

Just look at ITZY.

The South Korean five-member girl group formed by JYP Entertainment made their debut in 2019 and over the last three years, Yeji, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong, and Yuna have risen to become one of the leading bands in Korean pop music. Their debut was eagerly anticipated — after all, JYP is one of the big three agencies in the K-pop entertainment market and ITZY was the company’s first girl group to debut since TWICE in 2015. Their name is a reference to the Korean phrase “있지” which translates to “there is”, “have it”, or “got it”. Meaning to say, that ITZY has “it”. Whether “it” is a certain “it factor” or a je ne sais quoi quality, ITZY has it in spades.
