Unleashing and channelling creativity is the essential first step in the intricate process of jewellery making. While the quest for groundbreaking ideas can prove challenging, seasoned designers often turn to their tried and trusted methods, allowing the creative juices to flow effortlessly.
"The most important thing that I do is to stay completely open to ideas. I go beyond boundaries of right and wrong to allow myself the freedom to think and visualise. Once the answers are a vision in the head, I allow myself the fearlessness to be able to move forward and think beyond," says Pallavi Foley, Pallavi Foley Boutique Jewels, Bangalore.
While some designers leave it to imagination, others take cues from clients before they start. "I start the process by defining the persona of the woman I am designing for. Is she a contemporary woman? Is she a trendsetter? And so on. Only once I have a caricature of the woman in mind, I start the design process. Further, I believe jewellery should always have an element of 'play' and 'drama', so each piece is designed with a thoughtfully added layer of depth and dimension. This serves the end objective, which is to make the jewellery a conversation piece and make the woman a show stopper," says Varuna Jani, Varuna D Jani Fine Jewellery, Mumbai.
For some other designers, function takes precedence over form, and wearability is where their ideas take birth. "Our primary vision is to create lightweight and high-design pieces that have a striking impact on everyone, and are, most importantly, easily wearable and always enjoyable,” says Renu Oberoi, Renu Oberoi Boutique, Mumbai.
