NOT everyone has room for a 'proper' garden, but that need not stop you from growing plants. Even the smallest area can accommodate a few individual pots or a miniature garden made with a collection of plants that will stay small. Even better, if you are a student or you rent your home, the plants can move with you when you leave. And even those who have a good garden can enjoy creating a small display of succulents.

Don't buy tender

Many succulents are hardy enough to stay outside all year, although they dislike being in wet compost for long periods so it may be necessary to move them or rig up some kind of protection during really rainy spells. Always buy the plants from the outside area of the garden centre, so you don't pick up tender plants that need to live indoors by mistake as they can look very similar.

Avoid metal containers
