Parkinsons Disease tends to slowly damage the central nervous system, comprising of the brain and the spine thus affecting the motor system of the patient’s body.
According to a study, India has 7 million elders afflicted with Parkinson’s. Treatment options available for Parkinson’s disease include medication and surgery to manage its symptoms. The incidence and prevalence of Parkinsons Disease increase with advancing age (mostly 65 and above). Most commonly, this condition exhibits itself after the age of 50 years, but in some rare cases, it can affect people of younger age group as well.
- 1% of people over the age of 65 years suffers from Parkinsons disease (estimated about 12 lakh Indians living with Parkinsons in India).
- Parkinsons Disease is twice as common in men than in women in most populations (1 woman for every 3 men are impacted).
- Certain gene variations appear to increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease but with a relatively small risk of Parkinson’s disease for each of these genetic markers.
