Using innovative shapes and stitch textures, Georgia creates fresh, modern knit designs
HELEN SPEDDING
MY INSPIRATION Georgia Farrell

KNOWN FOR her architecturally inspired designs with clean lines, modern shapes and geometric textures, Georgia Farrell has produced a wide range of knitting patterns for the yarn company Rowan. We caught up with Georgia to find out more about her adventures in knitting and design.

When did you learn to knit?

"I learnt to knit as a child - my wonderful Nan taught me. I have fond memories of knitting a dish cloth, so that no matter how badly knitted it was and it was badly knitted it would still be useful!"

Can you remember the first original piece of knitwear you ever created?

"It was a large snood, which combined yarns and textured stitches - I made it up as I went along, and I was so happy with it. The first garment I created was when I was at university. I designed it as an entry to a competition, never imagining I'd actually make the final and have to knit the thing - but I did, and I had to. It was a long sleeveless jacket in chunky yarn (the deadline was very short!) with bands of colour and texture, with a large folded collar."

How did you came to work as a knitwear designer?
