Having a pet has an impact on the environment. But, by making a few changes, you can reduce your furkid's carbon 'pawprint' Here are six ways to make pet ownership more sustainable
Environmental Pawprints

Many of our lifestyle choices aren't very environmentally friendly. And this includes some of life's biggest sources of joy, such as having children, with one baby producing 58.6 tonnes of carbon annually.

Pets, similarly, come with their carbon 'pawprint! In terms of emissions, owning a pet takes the same toll on the planet as driving a car, and the pet industry is responsible for 25% of global meat production. This does not even account for the amount of waste produced in the form of food and toy packaging.

While we are not suggesting that you say goodbye to any family members, there are ways that animal owners can reduce their, and their pet's, impact on the environment. Here are six ways to make living with your furkid more sustainable.

Adopt, don't shop!

Out of the 14.9 million dogs and cats in SA, 4.1 million 27% are strays. So it is safe to say that we have an overpopulation problem when it comes to domestic animals. This is why it's more ethical and sustainable to adopt from a local shelter rather than buying from a breeder. Not only does this mean that you aren't contributing to the problem and are supporting your local community but you get the fulfilment of being able to give an animal a second chance at life. Your pet should also be spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted litters.
