THEY SAY OVERNIGHT SUCCESS takes 20 years. Jackson Wang’s rise is the perfect example. Before glittering fame, Wang was a promising fencer. In 2010, he competed in the Summer Youth Olympics held in Singapore. After that, while preparing for the 2012 London Olympics, Stanford University offered him a scholarship for the sport. Instead, Wang turned it down after emerging first out of 2,000 aspiring pop stars in a global audition.
South Korea beckoned, and Wang’s drive meant that fame wasn’t a possibility, but a foregone conclusion. In 2013, he debuted and became part of Korean group, Got7.
But Wang knew that he was meant for bigger things. In 2017, he founded record label TEAM WANG and released his first single ‘Papillon’. His first full-length English album Mirrors, released in 2019, became the highest-charting debut album from a Chinese artist.
Today, the 30-year-old is still at the top of his game with many exciting projects in his pipeline. That includes his ambassadorship with Louis Vuitton, where he made a memorable appearance on the night of 24 July for the Maison’s grand opening of its newest and largest store at Pavilion KL. We chat with the friendly and approachable Magic Man.
It’s been over a year since Louis Vuitton engaged you as its ambassador. How has the journey been and what were your favourite moments?
It’s interesting to me because this opportunity happened out of nowhere. It started out with my team meeting the brand just as friends. From there, the conversations evolved over time. Eventually, there was an opportunity for me to join Louis Vuitton as their next House Ambassador. I am honored to be onboard.
