If you've spent time in the Lake District, chances are you'll have spotted some unusual-looking sheep, notable for their distinctive blue-grey wool. These are Herdwick sheep - and their ancestors have roamed these fells for hundreds of years. The breed's name comes from the Old Norse herdvyck, meaning 'sheep farm' or 'pasture', revealing its Scandinavian heritage.
