WHEN Philip Roberts and Judi Burdett embarked on their self-build journey, they found a striking, remote farmhouse. The building had come to the end of its useful life and the plot needed careful thought and planning to reinvigorate it to its true potential, so the couple turned to bespoke oak-frame specialist Oakwrights.
Designing the dream
Masterminded by Oakwrights' architectural team, the design process began with a desktop appraisal to understand the site context and its planning history. This was followed by a site visit with the couple to assess the local area and the opportunities offered by the site, as well as constraints such as light, views, orientation and land contours. The couple's wish list included a 'wow-factor' entrance and a sociable, open-plan kitchen, dining area and family room. Another requirement was a sundeck with views over the pond.
