However, each state embraces unique cultural rituals during this festive season. One such noteworthy celebration is Narkasura Chaturdashi in Goa, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, Narkasur Vadh, or Choti Diwali in some Southern states. This celebration is rooted in an ancient mythological tale that has captivated people for centuries, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness.
Mythological Significance
According to legend, Narkasura was a tyrannical ruler born to Bhudevi, the goddess of Earth, and Varaha, the boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu. As he grew, Narkasura became increasingly powerful and arrogant, praying to Lord Brahma for a boon that rendered him nearly invincible. This boon stipulated that he could only be killed by his own mother, Bhudevi, which made him feel invulnerable. Armed with this power, Narkasura began to wreak havoc across the land, abducting young women and subjecting them to cruel captivity.
The villagers, feeling helpless and oppressed, turned to Lord Krishna for salvation. Krishna, known for his bravery and compassion, listened to their pleas. Ultimately, Satyabhama, Krishna's wife and an incarnation of Bhudevi, joined forces with him to confront Narkasura. The battle was fierce, but together they defeated the demon, freeing the captive women. After their victory, the liberated captives celebrated by lighting numerous oil lamps, a tradition that continues today, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
