It was the scene from every parent’s worst nightmare when 8-year-old Rihaan Khurana was left lying in the middle of the road, his scooter crumpled beside him as the four-wheel drive that hit him suddenly screeched to a halt.

Suddenly his father, Ashish, was running down the driveway, scooping his limp son up into his arms, terrified he’d been fatally injured.

“I heard a loud bang from our driveway, and I thought Rihaan had just fallen off his scooter,” his brother Aarush, who was 12 at the time, tells New Idea. “Dad was yelling. He’d picked Rihaan up and was carrying him inside. He was bleeding badly from his head, legs and arms. Mum and Dad were both panicking. I’ve never seen them like that before.”
