MAKING SENSE OF MONEY

Money’s hard to get, and it’s even harder to hold onto. I don’t know where I got my thriftiness from – maybe it was because Mum was a bit of a spendthrift. She loved clothes and handbags and shoes; I remember thinking, “You could have bought a block of land if you hadn’t bought all those matching hats and cigarette cases!”

I’m frugal with myself, but I don’t begrudge spending money on the people I love. I’ll quibble over a pair of thongs at Big W for $5, but have no qualms about spending $60 for a pair of shoes for my grandson, Bodhi. It’s just different.

But at home, when I see a skerrick of soap left, I think, “I’ll pat that onto a new one!” I can’t bear to waste it, I just can’t help myself. I’d like to think some of that has rubbed off on my sons.
