What makes Barbara Hepworth’s work special?
Barbara Hepworth was among a group of artists in the 1930s who pioneered the use of abstraction. Using direct carving rather than the more traditional technique of modelling, she developed a unique sculptural language, working primarily in stone, wood and metal. Over her lifetime, she created a vast number of works that ranged in scale from the intimate to the monumental.
Barbara Hepworth is one of the few women artists of her generation who received international recognition, exhibiting in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1950 and winning the Grand Prix of the Bienal de São Paulo in 1959.
