BOWIE LAM
Explain what you do in one sentence
I founded Teen’s Key shortly after graduating from university and through the organisation I aim to help girls and young women who are trapped in the sex trade, and more broadly promote gender equality in Hong Kong.
What is the greatest challenge you have overcome?
After the honeymoon period of starting up an organisation, managing a startup charity becomes physically and emotional exhausting. In the nonprofit industry, money is not a measure of our success, and it takes a longer time to see outcomes in the community. In the end, it’s our beneficiaries who remind me why we need to put in the effort and invest in the community. Their growth and positive change offset the hardship.
Who inspires you and why?
Yuet Lin Yim, the founder of a Hong Kong sex worker advocacy group, Ziteng. She is so dedicated to empowering sex workers in Hong Kong.
What impact do you want to make in the next five years?
To empower more young women and girls, especially those who are in difficult situations or from grassroots backgrounds, so they can achieve their dreams.
