Turandot at CCP
After their successful run of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore and Lucia di Lammermoor in 2017 and 2020, Italian director Maestro Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini and Prince Ravivaddhana Monipong Sisowath this time brought to Philippine shores the lyrical and visual spectacle of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot. The magnificent production, staged at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines last December 9 and 11, celebrated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Italy.
A landmark testament to world-class talent, the 2022 production of the beloved opera featured Korean soprano Lilia Lee in the titular role and Italian tenor Alessandro Liberatore as the Unknown Prince named Calaf. Sharing their art as well were Giovanni Pirandello as lighting designer and Maestro Valentino Favoino, guest conductor for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and the choral ensembles of the Turandot Opera Chorus and Tiples of Mandaluyong Children’s Choir.
High praises were also given to its Filipino and Korean principal cast members such as Rachelle Gerodias as Liu, Byeong In Park as Ping the Grand Chancellor, Ervin Lumauag as Pang the Grand Administrator and Ivan Nery as Pong the Grand Intendant. Equally impressive were Nomher Nival as Emperor Altoum, Greg de Leon as Mandarino and Jinsu Lee as Timur, the exiled Tartar King. Under the helm of Camille Lopez Molina, the Turandot
