CALLUM HUMPHREY REFLECTS ON ENGLAND'S DECISION TO APPOINT A GERMAN MANAGER AND LOOKS AT HIS CHANCES OF LEADING THE THREE LIONS TO GLORY
CALLUM HUMPHREY
TUCHEL TIME

IT WOULD be the ultimate irony should a German be the man to finally lead England to a major trophy again.

It must be said that initially the prospect of a foreign manager was one of discomfort for many people.

After all, it’s in the name, isn’t it? International football. Our nation against yours. Kai Havertz, Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller can’t stick an England shirt on, so why can Tuchel make Wembley his home?

Besides, past experiences have left scars. Memories of the late Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello’s England reigns aren’t exactly overwhelming.

So, why do the FA think it’s acceptable this time around?

Of course, an English manager would have been preferable but there’s no point hanging a line if there’s no fish in the sea.

Interim boss Lee Carsley did a good job of proving he was not ready, Eddie Howe remains unmoved from Newcastle and the idea of Graham Potter is not one that inspires.

If we are to be the best in the world – like the FA want us to be - that mentality starts in the dugout so the best man for the job deserves selecting, regardless of pride or bias.

Sven and Capello did not work. That is plain for all to see but that doesn’t mean that Tuchel won’t succeed.

The 51-year-old’s passion for the English game is sincere. He has spoken previously of how he feels more appreciated here than in his homeland and desperately wants to make an impact on our game.

His time at Chelsea gave him vital experience and an insight into English football. He should have no issue understanding and embracing the unique culture associated with the national team’s top job.

At a time where the game is more global than ever, cross-links between footballing nations are easier to comprehend and more common.
