LONG-SUFFERING Southend United supporters have been given the perfect Christmas present after contracts were formally changed for the sale of the crisis club.
The Shrimpers announced just minutes before their game at Kidderminster Harriers that much-maligned owner Ron Martin had handed over the reins to Australian businessman Justin Rees and his consortium.
The news came after Martin had agreed terms with Southend City Council leader Tony Cox relating to the residential development of Fossetts Farm. The deal had been the last major stumbling block in Rees completing his takeover of the club as it was a requirement for the Shrimpers to stay at Roots Hall under the new ownership.
The agreement is still subject to cabinet approval in early 2024 but the two parties have agreed to work together on operational aspects for this interim period prior to formal completion.
Discussions have also taken place with the National League and HMRC with the transfer embargo currently hanging over the club expected to be lifted next week.
