Camp Sadar Bazaar residents oppose move to chop 234 decades-old trees, write letter to PMO, Ministry of Defence; trees to make way for soldiers' housing

The Cantonment Board in Shahibaug has sparked controversy with its decision to fell age-old trees in the area. Local residents, vehemently opposed to the move,have lodged complaints with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Ministry of Defence. The board, however, maintains that the trees need to be removed to make way for residential quarters for soldiers.

This development comes at atime when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Ek Ped Maa ke Naam" campaign is actively promoting tree plantation and conservation efforts.

The green cover in Ahmedabad has been steadily dwindling over the years, exacerbating the heat caused by climate change.
