Most stroke patients in India still do not get the appropriate treatment in time, leading to long-term morbidity. Raising public awareness regarding stroke is essential to combat these challenges.
There have been significant recent changes in the landscape of stroke, especially in demographics, diagnosis, and treatment.
Demographics
Historically, stroke has affected older adults. Recent studies indicate a worrying trend: younger individuals, particularly in their 30s and 40s, are increasingly experiencing stroke. Factors contributing to this include sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits, and a rise in comorbid conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Socio-economic disparities exacerbate stroke risk, as individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds often have limited awareness about and access to preventive healthcare.
