Defunct swing gates in BRTS corridors enable entry of autos, bikes and cars, disrupting bus movements at peak hrs

Nothing rapid about BRTS at peak hours

Ahmedabad's Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), which was designed to provide a smooth and efficient transit experience, is not able to provide the same thanks to the non-functional automated swing gates. The gates were originally put up to restrict unauthorized entry into the BRTS lanes.

This has resulted in the dedicated bus lanes turning into shortcuts for commuters looking to avoid traffic congestion, especially during peak hours in the morning and evening.

Mirror Check reveals misuse

A Mirror investigation at various BRTS corridors found several gates either non-functional or not being used as intended, allowing private vehicles and auto-rickshaws to misuse the bus lanes freely.

Near Ellisbridge and Raikhad Crossroads, swing gates are present but not operational, leading to unrestricted use of the lanes by private vehicles.
