Bionic Man is back... Hero's welcome for MP who cheated death but lost limbs to sepsis

COURAGEOUS Craig Mackinlay was cheered and clapped as he returned to the Commons just five months after losing both hands and feet to sepsis.

His appearance was greeted with a standing ovation in a rare moment of unity in the chamber.

Mr Mackinlay, who wants to be known as the "bionic MP", used his return to praise medics who saved his life, and called for greater awareness of the deadly condition.

Watched on by his pharmacist wife Kati and daughter Olivia, he told the Commons it was "an emotional day for me".

Fitted with prosthetic hands and legs, he was applauded as he stood to ask: "Can we please ensure we embed recognition of early signs of sepsis? "If we can stop somebody ending up like this, I would say that is a job well done."
