A week of rioting has involved some of the most horrific scenes in years.
Burning cars. Smashed windows. Threatened mosques.
Hotels broken into and set alight for allegedly housing asylum seekers. Refugee shelters and the homes of immigration lawyers being targeted as Gangs of inter-ethnic communities facing off in what can only be described Neanderthal-style showdowns.
Meanwhile, the Government's response has left much to be desired. Unsurprisingly, Keir Starmer's popularity figures have plummeted.
But is anyone surprised? You only have to look at Home Secretary Yvette Cooper giving an interview to her husband, Ed Balls, on GMB to see how adrift Westminster is from the rest of the country.
Politicians may think they are saying all the right things. But it clearly is not enough to ask the rioters to stop, or threaten them with anti-terror legislation.
What happens after the rightful condemnation and mandatory lip service?
When will ministers ask what has brought us to this utterly depressing state of affairs?
To blame the riots on "farRight thuggery" and social media is lazy, tone deaf and a betrayal of the British public.
Let me be clear: there are racist far-Right thugs involved.
