ISRAEL pounded a humanitarian safe zone in southern Gaza yesterday killing at least 40 people, the Hamasrun Civil Defence authority said.
Dozens more were injured in the coordinated air strikes near the city of Khan Younis.
The Israeli military claimed its aircraft had attacked an operations centre belonging to Hamas fighters, and stressed it had taken steps to mitigate risk of harming civilians.
It also disputed the figure of 40 dead, saying it was far lower. But the act of attacking a designated humanitarian zone the second time in days - will cause more disquiet in the international community.
