Members of Jersey's Assembly voted 32 to 14 in favour of introducing it for mentally competent, terminally ill adults with fewer than six months to live, or a year with a neurodegenerative condition.
Dr Nigel Minihane, a GP for more than 30 years who has campaigned for assisted dying since 2018, believes this was the right decision.
He added: "I'm very proud that they have been brave enough to take that step and actually join a growing throng around the world that are looking at this and changing their laws.
"France, our nearest neighbour, is no exception. It's nice to see that the Isle of Man and possibly Scotland could be close on our heels."
Diminish
The Daily Express Give Us Our Last Rights crusade is campaigning for assisted dying to be legalised in the UK.
The assembly voted 27 to 19 against eligibility for those suffering unbearably from an incurable condition but are not terminally ill.
