DONALD Trump's homecoming New York City campaign rally descended into chaos when a warm-up comedian described Puerto Rico as a "floating island of garbage".

Tony Hinchcliffe's comments to 20,000 Make America Great Again supporters at Madison Square Garden enraged Democrats and Republicans.

Puerto Rican stars including singers Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin and rapper Bad Bunny urged their fans to back Democrat Kamala Harris.

At Sunday night's rally, Hinchcliffe, 40, said of the US Caribbean territory: "There's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it's called Puerto Rico."

Targeting key voter groups in the US presidential election next Tuesday, he also suggested Latinos "loved making babies", commented on black people and watermelons and made crude remarks about Jews.
