Israel airstrike on consulate in Syria kills Iran general

IRAN'S embassy in Damascus was destroyed yesterday by an Israeli airstrike, killing or wounding everyone inside, Syria's state media said.

It reportedly killed senior Iranian military adviser General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. Zahedi previously led the Iranian elite Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016.

British-based opposition war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least six people died in the airstrike.

The Israeli military did not comment but Iran's Revolutionary Guard says the strike killed two of its generals and five officers.

Iran's state television al-Alam and pan-Arab TV station al-Mayadeen, which has reporters in Syria, reported that Zahedi had died.
