Shawn Seesahai, 19, was attacked for "no reason at all" by a pair of machete-wielding boys as he walked across a Wolverhampton park.
Relatives of Anguilla-born Shawn called last November's murder "tragic, unexpected and senseless".
A Nottingham Crown Crown Court sentencing hearing was told how the defendants who blamed each other at their trial - still deny being responsible for the killing.
Shawn died after being stabbed in the heart and suffering a skull fracture on Stowlawn Playing Fields.
The trial heard how the victim had initially been shoulder-barged by the smaller of the two boys, who "often" carried a machete with a 17in-long blade, before before being punched, kicked, stamped on and "chopped" at with the deadly blade.
