Captain Fantastic Ben Stokes was unable to rescue England in the second Ashes Test, and Australian cricketers clashed with jeering fans amid "cheating" claims.
The England skipper's epic knock of 155 had the home support dreaming of an unlikely victory.
But his dismissal ended hopes of a record run chase at Lord's, with Australia finally sealing a dramatic 43-run win to take a 2-0 series lead.
A dejected Stokes said: "Unfortunately, it wasn't enough today. It's a tough one to swallow."
The defeat was made all the harder to swallow after the controversial dismissal of England's Jonny Bairstow that led to Lord's members exchanging words with the Aussies as they filed through the London ground's famous Long Room. Three members were later suspended.
