FURIOUS Tories turned on PM Rishi Sunak for his D-Day snub, declaring he would have been ousted as party leader had he not been in the middle of an election campaign.
Mr Sunak left Foreign Secretary David Cameron to take his place with world leaders at a D-Day commemoration on Omaha Beach to record a TV interview.
One despairing minister told the Mirror: "Don't even ask. The wheels have come off. It's over." And Cabinet minister Penny Mordaunt last night condemned the PM's decision during a BBC election debate. She said: "I think what happened was very wrong.
Leaked messages from a private group for verified Conservative members, seen by the Mirror, showed the level of fury among the party's grassroots.
One member wrote that the latest gaffe showed Mr Sunak "really only cares about himself".
Another said: "He will go down as the most selfish PM ever." A third said: "It just shows what a dumpster fire this campaign is...
