BY HECTOR NUNNS CARLOS ALCARAZ and Che Adams kept the promotion bid bang on track for Southampton but Plymouth were left feeling robbed at St Mary's.
A turning point in the match saw Bali Mumba's header at 0-0 ruled out for offside, but replays showed the wing-back was onside from Morgan Whittaker's cross.
And the home side then went straight down the other end to open the scoring through a wonder strike from 21-year-old Argentinian Alcaraz (inset, right).
Adams doubled the lead, before a Gavin Bazunu howler gave Plymouth substitute Ryan Hardie a stoppage-time consolation goal.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was in the crowd as his team made it 17 unbeaten, with 12 wins and five draws since their last defeat in September.
But Argyle caretaker Neil Dewsnip was left aggrieved though his time with the reins may be running out, with Plymouth linked to former Wigan boss Paul Cook, among others.
Dewsnip said: "I'm devastated for the players about the disallowed goal and really disappointed with the decision. We don't seem to get the rub of the green and that is hard to take.
