Legend Davis says doubling Crucible size could stop World Championship moving to new venue after growing criticism

STEVE DAVIS wants the Championship to stay at the Crucible - but admits it needs to be twice the size.

Snooker is synonymous with Sheffield, with the city being the sport's spiritual home since it began staging the event way back in 1977.

Davis dominated the 80s as he and then manager Barry Hearn (circled) ruled the world on six separate occasions.

The future of the green baize game's marquee tournament has been hot topic over the past fortnight, with the current deal up in 2027.

There is a growing argument that it has outgrown the iconic venue, which holds 980 people.

Tickets for next year's edition, which went on sale yesterday, are virtually sold out.
