SAM ROBERTSON has revealed he likes his Coronation Street character Adam Barlow “a lot more now than I did a few years ago”.
The 37-year-old, from Dundee, who took over the role of lawyer Adam from fellow Scot Iain De Caestecker in 2004, has often had a love/hate relationship with being in the soap.
But it seems since womaniser Adam, who is Mike Baldwin’s son, married Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and got a taste of his own medicine after she had an affair, Sam has found him more interesting to play.
Sam, who quit the show in 2007 after three years on set before returning in 2016, said: “When I came back I watched a lot of old episodes. What Mike had was the perfect mix of being a little cocky, and at times a bit smarmy, but also some charm. I wanted Adam to have his charm.
“The team have tried to shape Adam in the same vein. I think we’ve seen the nice guy a lot more since he married Sarah.
“She has calmed him down. The lothario has gone since he’s had that security so I definitely like him a lot more now than I did a few years ago. Hopefully the audience feels the same.”
They certainly seem to be siding with him since he discovered Sarah had cheated on him with Damon Hay (Ciaran Griffiths) and is now pregnant – not knowing if it’s Adam or Damon who is the father.
Sam laughed: “I get told, ‘Your wife’s a dirty so-and-so, ‘Your wife’s at it behind your back’, and, ‘Do you know your wife is having an affair?’ You just have to laugh along or pretend you don’t know. It’s all fun and games. Most people know it’s not real and just want to have a bit of banter.”
