No medal but Muir still proud

AN emotional Laura Muir declared herself a winner last night despite finishing sixth in the women’s 1500 metres final.

Close to tears but not of disappointment.

Since landing bronze 12 months ago in Oregon, the Scot’s been on a roller-coaster ride with more lows than highs.

She was right in the mix on the last lap but the break came and the legs didn’t respond.

World record holder Faith Kipyegon lived up to her billing by bolting to her third world title in 3:54.87.

Ethiopian prodigy Diribe Welteji landed silver and Dutch ace Sifan Hassan held off a battling push from Northern Irish star Ciara Mageean to land bronze. But Muir, who clocked 3:58.58, had to survive a painful split with her longtime coach Andy Young five months ago with all the hurt that it brought.
