A PROLIFIC sex offender dubbed "Scotland's Savile" was allowed to continue teaching kids for 40 years after multiple opportunities to stop him were missed.
A new investigation has found that Iain Wares, likened to Savile for his scale of offending by broadcaster Nicky Campbell, faced eight complaints about child sex abuse in his native South Africa before he came to Scotland.
He then faced a at least five accusations over abuse while he was teaching at private schools in Scotland - but no action was taken to prosecute him.
Wares, 84, is facing charges of sexual abuse against a former pupil in his South African homeland in February before judges rule in the spring on possible extradition to Scotland.
Wares faces charges over more than 80 offences against more than 40 victims in Scotland, where he sought residential psychiatric treatment for his paedophilia at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital before starting a job as a teacher at Edinburgh Academy.
In a BBC Panorama programme tonight, My Teacher the Abuser: Fighting for Justice, Wares' victims speak of his abuse at Edinburgh Academy and at neighbouring Fettes between 1968 and 1979.
Alex Renton, an investigator who shone the first light into the secret shame of sexual abuse in boarding schools, says in the programme that the people who facilitated Wares abusive career also committed crimes.
He said: "The people who put the reputations of our schools before the safety of our children, who passed these men on to get them off their plates, they are the ones who didn't get hauled up for their crimes and these are very real crimes.
