There are fears households could be "drowning in litter" over the festive season after the decision not to collect grey recycling bins in Glasgow over the Christmas and New Year period.

The GMB union has blamed a lack of staff and repeated budget cutbacks for the situation at the SNP-run Glasgow City Council.

Union leader Louise Gilmour said: "Talk about a bleak midwinter? Chipping ice off the wheelie bin before packing the bags into the car and driving to the dump is nobody's idea of a Christmas treat.

"That thousands of families in our biggest city might need to because their bins will not be emptied for almost two months only underlines the funding crisis in Scotland's councils." Households with grey bins - for plastics, metals, cartons, and tins due to be collected on Christmas Day will not see a crew until January 22.
