Take me to the river

I GOT my first proper crisp autumn day on the river last week.

Trout and salmon are done for the season so it felt like the perfect time to target grayling.

Waking up with a spring in my step I was out the door and down the river. It was early and chilly so the nymphs were on my 10ft 3wt setup.

This year I’ve simplified things down and swapped out a fly line for a 12m Carp Tapered Leader (camo obviously) as the mainline and some funky-coloured backing on an old reel.

The business end is a multicoloured indicator leader section with a fiddly but handy tippet ring to attach to the mainline and leader.

Swap up the leader and flies to suit the depth of water you’re fishing and trundle a variety of beaded nymphs or weighted bugs close to the bottom.

When nymphing for grayling, the indicator section is extremely important as it allows you to detect the slightest of bites.
