NEARLY three in four Scots want a ban on cars idling outside school gates to protect air quality for children.

An Opinion Matters survey of more than 1000 people also revealed that 62 per cent of respondents are worried about air pollution near schools.

The findings, for the charity Asthma + Lung UK Scotland, come on World Asthma Day.

About 73 per cent of Scots schools are estimated to be in areas above the World Health Organisation guideline limits for particulate matter.

Particulate matter is made up of tiny particles in the air linked to domestic burning, traffic and brake and tyre wear.

The charity’s poll found 72 per cent of Scots would like to see a ban on school gate polluters enforced.
