ENGLAND bowed out of the World Cup with pride last night after a heartbreaking defeat to reigning champions France.
Captain Harry Kane equalled Wayne Rooney’s record as the Three Lions all-time top scorer. But he then missed a penalty seven minutes from full-time.
France held on to win 2-1 and will go on to face Morocco – shock conquerors of Portugal – in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Gareth Southgate’s Lions, who sank to the pitch in tears at the final whistle, will fly home later today.
Olivier Giroud scored France’s second-half winner after a Kane penalty – his record-equalling 53rd England goal – cancelled out Aurelien Tchouameni’s opener.
