The head coach suffered deadline day disappointment when Crystal Palace announced Marc Guehi would not be sold to Newcastle for £70million.
That left United without their top target and meant Howe could not argue with the assertion his squad was weaker than in May.
Add to that a new management structure, with Paul Mitchell installed as sporting director in charge of doing deals, and it has been a rocky two months.
