FEDERICO VALVERDE produced a moment of magic in Madrid to deny Manchester City a famous win in the Bernabeu.
City had been on course to edge another classic thanks to two second-half strikes from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol.
The roof Real had been so desperate to have closed appeared to have caved in on them in this gripping showdown.
But Valverde raised it again with a late leveller 11 minutes from time to leave the tie in the balance ahead of the return leg at the Etihad next Wednesday.
This was the third season in a row these two rivals had clashed in the latter stages of the Champions League.
They've had some belters too - and this was to be no different with Real hell-bent on revenge for being dumped out of the semi-finals 5-1 on aggregate last season.
Some of Carlo Ancelotti's stars had spoken of wanting to avenge that crushing loss while UEFA allowed Real to close the roof to make it more intimidating, with home fans urged to turn up in white.
