And Larry Lloyd repaid him by cleaning out opposition strikers for the next five years.

Lloyd, who has died at the age of 75, was a key player in the Nottingham Forest side which won the European Cup in 1979 and 1980 under boss Clough.

The Bristol-born defender joined them from Liverpool, where he was a member of the team that won the Division One title and UEFA Cup.

And the tough centre-half, who won four caps for England, went on to manage Wigan and Notts County after a hugely successful playing career.

Forest said yesterday: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Larry Lloyd.

“Part of the Miracle Men, Larry was an integral player in the Forest side that memorably won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, making 218 appearances in total.
