Carsley can lead England but he'll need to be brave

As a young football fan in the mid-noughties, Lee Carsley's pomp was very much in my era.

Carsley, England's interim manager who will name his first (and possibly only) squad tomorrow, is best known for making nearly 200 appearances for David Moyes's Everton from 2002 to 2008.

Yet, like most non-Everton fans, my memories of him are hazy. Carsley was the type of unglamorous grafter who rarely caught the eye. Today he is as remembered for being easy to confuse with long-time midfield partner Thomas Gravesen (both bald).

As a highly-regarded coach, Carsley has continued to work away from the spotlight, taking a series of caretaker jobs before the outstanding success of his post-playing career in leading England's Under-21s to the European Championship in the summer of 2023.
