OSCAR Jerome isn't totally with his comfortable expanding fame. But it keeps growing, nonetheless. Little wonder: the singer, guitarist and composer doesn’t just come armed with a nu-jazz sound that mixes in elements of rock, soul and London-generated beats, he pens lyrics that spear the zeitgeist with sharp-edged poeticism. He has a gorgeous singing voice and formidable on-stage charisma — so it’s not surprising he has been compared to Harry Styles. He also plays his Gibson like a boss.
From being touted as a ‘hot new artist’ by the likes of Jamz Supernova, having a 2018 hit single Do You Really — a tune about struggling with unrealistic ideals of gender and masculinity — to working with producer Catching Flies to supporting saxophonist du jour Kamasi Washington, Jerome has now gone on to tour Europe and Australia and recently released his brilliant second album, The Spoon, complete with arty video accompaniment. Wednesday’s gig at Lafayette in King’s Cross has been sold out for weeks.
