A CABINET minister told junior doctors today to call off their strike so pay talks can take place without a "Sword of Damocles" hanging over them.
Former health secretary Steve Barclay also claimed the walk-outs were "politically motivated" and that junior doctors were refusing to budge from their demand for a 35 per cent pay rise.
He accused junior doctors' leaders of "walking away" from the negotiating table, a claim denied by the British Medical Association (BMA).
The intervention by Mr Barclay, who is now Environment Secretary, came on the second day of the longest ever strike by junior doctors as the NHS struggles with winter pressures.
