According to the latest figures from the British Retail Consortium, on a total basis, sales increased by 6.9% in December, compared with an increase of 2.1% in December 2021. This is above both the three-month average growth of 4.4% and 12-month average growth of 3.1%, suggesting that the Christmas boost was well in effect.
Tesco reported a 7.9% sales increase year-on-year over the Christmas period, while Sainsbury's enjoyed 7.1% growth. Similarly, in the 13 weeks to December 31, M&S said total UK sales grew 7.2%.
Today Burberry added to the more optimistic mood, saying that UK sales over the third quarter to the end of December were strong and improved each month. Curry's UK "peak period" sales were also better than expected, though down 5% on the previous year, while WH Smith's like-for-like sales were flat.
