The Ukrainian president warned of ferocious battles amid reports that his forces had suffered a significant setback after a counter-attack which had seen them seize back territory in the industrial city in the Luhansk province.
As Vladimir Putin’s generals were sending more troops into the offensive, Mr Zelensky said: “They outnumber us, they are more powerful.”
In its nightly update, the Ukrainian military said two civilians were killed in Russian shelling in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions yesterday and that Russian forces had fired at more than 20 communities, claims which could not be confirmed independently.
