THE Iranian climber who took off her hijab during a competition in South Korea returned to a hero’s welcome in Tehran today.
Videos shared online showed large crowds gathered early this morning at Imam Khomeini international airport to greet Elnaz Rekabi.
The videos showed the crowds chanting the 33-year-old’s name and calling her a hero. Rekabi’s appearance on Sunday in Seoul without the hijab headdress required of female athletes from the Islamic Republic came as protests sparked by the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini entered a fifth week. Ms Amini was detained by the country’s morality police for not wearing a hijab — and her death has seen women removing their own mandatory hijabs in public in protest.
Human rights groups estimate that over 200 people have been killed in the protests and the violent security force crackdown that followed.
